This week (November 2-8) is Occupational Therapy Week, which this year is aimed at inspiring people from all backgrounds to choose occupational therapy as a career.
The Royal College of Occupational Therapists (RCOT) has asked OTs to share why they love their job, and here is what our fabulous team members Rosy and Louise had to say:
Rosy said: “I love being an occupational therapist because I have always enjoyed connecting with people and learning about the things that make a person ‘tick’. My job allows me the time to hear the person’s story and support them to identify the things/tasks/roles that are most important to them.
“As an OT, we help people to identify a goal and support them to work towards attaining that goal – it could be anything! Getting in/out of the bath, on/off the loo, riding their horse or getting married. The process requires creative thinking and a problem solving approach with a little bit of risk taking thrown in for good measure!
“For the last two years I have worked as a hospice OT, this has made me love my job even more. Along with the rest of the team we support people to continue living whilst dying. Each day is a gift, not a given right.”
Louise said: “I love being an occupational therapist because every day is different, I get to meet so many different people and help them to stay as independent as they can and continue doing the things that are meaningful and important to them. I love hearing about their personal stories, meeting their loved ones and finding solutions to their obstacles. I feel extremely privileged to be in the position that I am in at Saint Catherine’s Hospice.”
