for the two-yearly, two-day Palliative Care Conference – The ‘P’ Word: Still Relevant in a changing
world?
The conference is organised by Saint Catherine’s Hospice, Scarborough, in association with York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. Although most delegates are regional, people do attend from all over the UK. The conference is directed at clinicians working in primary/generalist or specialist palliative care and usually attracts about 130 delegates.
The 2020 conference will be about how palliative care must meet the needs of a changing world to provide the best outcomes possible for those for whom we care. Sessions will explore:
- How palliative care (general and specialist) could and should contribute given our current and projected clinical challenges.
- How palliative care can and should be more accessible at the point of need.
- ‘Brave’ questions about the distinctiveness, relevance and accountability of palliative care.

Online Registration
Whilst it is decided when the conference will be rearranged for, the online registration portal has been closed. However, you will be able to register here once it opens again.
Workshops
On both days of the conference, there will be a selection of workshops delivered for attendees. These include:
– ‘The ‘D’ word: dealing with delirium’ – led by Dr Hannah Zacharias, Consultant in Palliative Care, St Gemma’s Hospice.
– ‘Ceilings of care and DNACPR (Do Not Attempt Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation)’ – led by Dr Donald Richardson, Deputy Medical Director of York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
– ‘Research: challenges to practice?’ – led by Professor Miriam Johnson, Professor of Palliative Medicine, Hull York Medical School and Director of the Wolfson Palliative Care Research Centre, University of Hull. Honorary Consultant to Saint Catherine’s Hospice and York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
– ‘Palliative care: At the paramedic’s coalface’ – led by Mr Andrew Hodge, Consultant Paramedic Urgent Care, Yorkshire Ambulance Service and Mrs Emma Davison.
– ‘Clinical Nurse Specialists: How do we know we are fit for purpose?’ – led by Ms Catherine Malia, Nurse Consultant, St Gemma’s Hospice and Mrs Charlotte Rock, Macmillan Palliative and End of Life Care Lead Nurse, Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust.
– ‘Working with patients no-one else can help’ – lead TBC.

Exhibitions
There will also be a selection of exhibitions on show throughout the conference dates, we will update this as we get more confirmed.
– Dr Ann Hutchinson’s HYMS Breathlessness Exhibition – In collaboration with artists and local people living with breathlessness, the Wolfson Palliative Care Research Group have created the Bringing Breathlessness into View exhibition, which aims to raise awareness of what it is like to live with breathlessness, and enable people to access support to manage breathlessness well. The exhibition will be on show throughout the conference and we welcome your comments.

Booking Terms and Conditions
- Saint Catherine’s Hospice reserves the right to cancel a booking if payment is not made six weeks prior to the conference taking place.
- Written cancellations received six weeks prior to the conference will be accepted and refunds will be given less a 10% administration fee. After this date, no refunds can be given.
- Verbal cancellations will not be accepted. If written cancellation is not received six weeks prior to the conference full payment will still be due irrespective of whether the delegate attends the conference.
- Substitute delegates are welcome at any time.
- All delegates registered as students will have to provide evidence of student ID which will be checked when registering for the conference on 10th /11th
- Saint Catherine’s Hospice reserves the right to make changes to the speakers and programmes without prior notice. Speakers correct at time of print.
